     Kailua High School Registration

Incoming 9th Graders

Thank you for considering to take band as your elective during your freshman year.  Just remember that the most important thing to bring to class is a good attitude, even above a strong playing ability!

When you look at your registration card, you will see several options under Band.  The first one you want to check is Concert Band 1.  Put a "1" on the line to make it your top priority.  (You were asked to provide 5 or 6 priority numbers to get that class.  However, as a freshman, you will probably not get anything other than your first or second choice.  If you want to be in band, you are recommended to place a "1" on the line).

Why take band in High School?

High School Band is a very challenging and rewarding class.  You will continue learning about music and will get valuable experience as a performing musician.  You will make great friendship, travel around the nation and the world, and be considered for college scholarships that non-band members would be ineligible for.

Why the Kailua High School Band?

The Kailua High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Henry Fu, is an award-winning program.  They have received excellent and superior ratings for their concert and marching bands.  They go on trips to places like California and Japan.  They "pep" up football and boys and girls basketball games.  They have a fun jazz band.  You will be well-informed about other musical opportunities around the island such as select band, solo/ensembles and Youth Symphony.  You will have fun, and learn quite a bit, as well.

The band is a small, tightly-knit community.  If you have a good personality and are willing to learn, we welcome you to join, learn and grow with us.

What if I play sports?  Can I still Join the Band?

Absolutely!

Concert Band is a graded class during the school day, just like math, history, science, etc.  We have athletes in the band program who are also happy band members.  We even have a few multi-sport athletes in our  program.

Marching Band, because of the meeting times, basically only conflicts with football and volleyball.  But remember that marching band is a different class altogether than concert band, and meets at different times.

Besides Concert Band...

You might want to consider taking Marching Band as an elective.  Marching Band meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-6PM and Saturdays from 10AM-3PM.  We will perform a halftime show for two to exhibitions, two competitions and our annual Homecoming game.

Marching Band is a 1/2 credit and a 7th period, so if you sign up, you will automatically get it.  It does not conflict with other courses, as far as I know, because it occurs outside of the normal school day (although it is a REAL graded class).

Marching Band demands a lot of time to be spent at school, but the rewards are tremendous.  In fact, the retention rate (how many students stick with the program year to year) is very high.  Visit the marching band page for more information.

We also offer a jazz band program starting in January.
